LOS ANGELES — The approximately 14,000 faithful that attended the Heal L.A. event at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Saturday, May 17, included 56-year-old FilAm Teresita de la Cruz of Norwalk, California, and Dana Beier and her 6-year-old daughter, Brooke, of Belleville, Ohio. The Heal L.A. healing event was the largest ever organized in the United States by “healing priest” Fr. Fernando Suarez and some 700 volunteers. The funding, reportedly was put upfront by businesswoman Rosie Chua.
One of the volunteers was Bing De la Vega, a coordinator. De la Vega monitored over 15 committees that were involved in the event whose planning began in March. He revealed that Saturday’s Heal L.A. activities were reconfigured after the organizers determined that Fr. Fernando would not be able to touch and pray over all the sick congregants.
The acclaimed healing priest had been to more than 40 countries with Fr. Jeff Shannon of the Mary, Mother of the Poor Foundation in Los Angeles, according to coordinator Frances Atienza. Fr. Suarez was in his element on Saturday at the multi-ethnic Mass, and during the healing session that followed. He trode to the front of the purpose-built stage that served as altar and addressed the cheering faithful.
“It is Trinity Sunday, and you are here because God loves you,” he began his homily. “God is the one who called you here today one by one. God gave us Jesus and this Jesus is the healer,” he said. “I’m not the healer. I am only God’s instrument. He is going to manifest his healing power and he is going to touch each and every one of you.”
Some of the FilAm community’s who’s who attended the event, including Consul General Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon, civic leader Zeny Sabocor, couture fashion designer David Tupaz, volunteer Alez Cuadra, Vics Magsaysay and his mother, Doris, Ted Benito and his mother, Johnny Pecayo of FAMEGATE Magazine, Dan Baltazar of Press Photographers of the Philippines, Irwin Jazmines of PPP, and photographers Nic Arriola, Andy Tecson, Benjie Uy, Noel Guinto, Art Ramos and Willie Cheng.![]()
